Ghost Brothers Coming to New York?

Playbill.com is reporting that the makers of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County may try for a New York run.

The musical received mixed to cool critical notices in Atlanta, but Booth and the co-authors are still hopeful for a future life. A ten-day New York City presentation is reported for this September, with Booth again at the helm and musical direction by T Bone Burnett.

Mondo and I saw the play and both liked it with a few reservations.  You can read Mondo's review here.

"In the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi in 1957, a terrible tragedy took the lives of two brothers and a beautiful young girl. During the next 40 years, the events of that night became the stuff of local legend. But legend is often just another word for lie. Joe McCandless knows what really happened; he saw it all. The question is whether or not he can bring himself to tell the truth in time to save his own troubled sons, and whether the ghosts left behind by an act of violence will help him — or tear the McCandless family apart forever."

Photos From Carrie, the Musical's Cast Recording

MCC Theater posted some pictures of the cast of Carrie the Musical recording their album of songs from the play.

Carrie got its long-awaited first-ever official cast recording yesterday when the incredible cast of MCC’s revised production of the legendary (notorious? misunderstood?) musical assembled at MSR Studios in the Broadway district to lay down tracks for the upcoming Ghostlight/Sh-K-Boom release.

It was a long day of work (13 hours!), but it was a thrill from start to finish. Lots of bagels, sandwiches, plenty of liquids, and yes, junk food, were consumed, but the driving energy came from the historic event itself. Everyone was on a cloud. And the cast nailed it! Fittingly, the last track laid down was “When There’s No One” and Marin Mazzie TURNED IT OUT! We’ll have to wait a few months for the album release, but trust us: it’s going to be worth it! Stay tuned…

Check them out here.

Review of the Music from Ghost Brothers of Darkland County

Access Atlanta posted a short review of the music from Ghost Brothers.  This isn't a full review of the play, they're waiting until it comes out of previews to post that.

”Ghost Brothers,” directed by Susan Booth, is a rustic musical. There are no fancy orchestrations or swelling symphonies; simply the type of instruments you’d expect to hear in Mellencamp’s own music – slide guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, accordion – and songs that range from guttural and goofy (“That’s Me”) to a barroom stomper (“Put Me in the Ground”) to melancholy pop balladry (“Away From This World”).

I hope they release the music as an album.  I'd love to hear it.

For the full review head over here.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is a collaboration from Stephen King and John Mellencamp.  For more about Ghost Brothers click HERE.
